As of 23 May of this year, the maximum hours an international student, holding a valid Dutch residence permit for study and enrolled at a Dutch education institution, is allowed to work next to their studies has been increased from 10 to 16 hours per week. The preexisting alternative, to work full time during the months June, July and August, remains unchanged. A work permit, which can be issued for a maximum of one year, is still required. Remuneration for work activities must be at least at minimum wage level.
Another positive development is the improved opportunity for non-EU students studying outside the Netherlands to do an internship. Before, when applying for the work permit, an internship had to be a mandatory part of the study program, now it only needs to be relevant for the student’s education. Moreover, this work permit exemption is valid for up to two years after completion of the study program. Depending on the duration of the internship through, a residence permit may still be required.
