Until now the temporary protection for those fleeing Ukraine had been extended until 4 March 2027 with over 4 million displaced persons making use of this temporary protection within the EU. The EU now has decided to extend this until 4 March 2028.
The EU wants to keep its commitment to support Ukraine and its people and extending the temporary protection with another year also provides clarity and predictability for all individuals fleeing the war in Ukraine.
A new nuance is that the EU is also taking into account Ukraine’s evolving defence needs. Therefore, for all new applicants, the temporary protection will only be granted to the individuals who satisfy their military obligations in Ukraine. For the ones already residing in EU countries based on this Directive, there won’t be any changes.
As long as the reasons for temporary protection persist, the Council can decide, by qualified majority on a proposal from the Commission, to extend the temporary protection up to one year.
