On 24 December 2014 the highest Dutch administrative court (Raad van State) decided that Japanese citizens are allowed to work in the Netherlands without the need for a work permit (TWV).

Under the Treaty of Commerce and Navigation between Japan and the Netherlands Japanese nationals should be treated similar to Swiss nationals who are allowed to live and work in the Netherlands just like any other Dutch citizen.

In practice this means amongst others that Japanese citizens no longer need to comply with the requirements applicable to highly skilled migrants or transfers within a group of companies.
However, it is still unclear if and under which conditions Japanese citizens still need a Dutch residence permit.
